The IEBC voter portal is currently inaccessible due to system maintenance, making it impossible for Kenyans to verify their registration details.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) explained that this maintenance supports its ongoing migration to a more secure and efficient infrastructure. The new system aims to improve performance and strengthen security protocols.
Kenyans usually verify voter information via the IEBC web portal or by texting their ID or passport number and year of birth to 70000. At the moment, both services remain unavailable.

IEBC Offers No Timeline for Restoration
Although millions rely on the IEBC voter portal, the Commission has not provided a timeline for its return. In a public statement, IEBC said:
“We will promptly communicate once the system is fully operational and ready for verification of voter details.”
This vague update has caused frustration, especially since many citizens noticed the portal was down before any formal announcement.
So far, IEBC has not clarified:
- When the maintenance began
- How long it may last
- What technologies or components they are upgrading
IEBC Confirms Voter Data Remains Secure
Despite the downtime, IEBC has assured the public that voter records remain safe. According to the Commission:
“The registration details of the 22,120,458 registered voters, as recorded during the 2022 General Election, remain intact and secure.”
They emphasized that the system upgrade is necessary for better service delivery.
Kenyans Express Frustration Over the Downtime
Many Kenyans have voiced concern about the lack of transparency surrounding the portal’s outage. Civic advocates argue that IEBC should have communicated earlier and more clearly.
Even so, the electoral body reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and improved services. It also apologized for the inconvenience:
“We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we work towards serving you better.”
