Google AI Search Gains Canvas Workspace and Live Video

Canvas Workspace Expands Persistent Planning for Students

The biggest upgrade for Google’s AI Search is the launch of Canvas, an interactive side panel for planning and research. Unlike previous AI responses that disappeared after one use, Canvas enables users to build, edit, and return to study guides, itineraries, or project plans across multiple sessions—making it ideal for students and collaborative research.

To start, students can ask AI Search to generate a study plan for exams, then press the “Create Canvas” button to open a persistent outline in the Canvas panel. Real-time refinements are possible with follow-up questions. Google is adding file upload options, letting users bring in class notes or syllabi for customized planning. Robby Stein, VP of Product for Search, calls Canvas a “more immersive, advanced version of a full-screen companion” for academic and planning use.

AI Search on Desktop Introduces Image & PDF Uploads

AI Search’s desktop interface now supports image uploads—a feature previously available only on mobile. More importantly, PDF upload options will arrive soon, helping students analyze lecture slides or textbook pages directly. The AI system can cross-reference uploaded files with online content, delivering instant explanations and research links. Google also plans to expand support later this year to include Google Drive files.

Search Live: Real-Time Video Search with Google Lens

A major leap for AI Search is the addition of Live Video Search through Google’s Project Astra, integrated with Google Lens. Students can point their phone cameras at math equations, diagrams, or other visual materials and receive AI-driven feedback in real-time. The system maintains context—even with moving objects or changing angles—and allows for in-depth conversations about on-screen topics.

This feature begins rolling out to U.S. mobile users in the AI Search Labs experiment. Google is also enhancing Lens for Chrome: the “Ask Google about this page” shortcut in the address bar lets users select webpage content and obtain AI summaries or deeper insights with a single click.

Note: All features are currently limited to U.S. users enrolled in the AI Search Labs experiment, with Canvas specifically for desktop browsers.
