US Senate had scheduled a hearing for the Tech bosses to inquire and get more information on the policies and regulations to be put in place to safeguard the children from social media harm. The tech companies which include Meta, TikTok, Snap, X and Discord. the unified Senate members from both parties questioned the Tech for almost four hours. Families of those claiming that their children had self harmed while others killed themselves as a result of social media contents were present during the hearing. Meta and Instagram boss Mark Zuckerberg apologized to the families saying,”I’m sorry for everything you’ve all gone through, it’s terrible.No-one should have to go through the things that your families have suffered.”
The lawmakers on the other hand wanted to know what measures the tech bosses were going to put in place to protect the children online. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew acknowledged that being a father of three kids he was aware that the issue being discussed was very paramount saying its an horrific and the nightmare of every parent. Before the hearing Meta had made changes concerning the safety of children online. The safety measure states that by default, be unable to receive messages on Instagram and Messenger from strangers. They also said they brought in “over 30 tools” to support a safe environment for teens online. However the parents of the children who self harmed staged a rally outside to compel the lawmakers pass a legislation to make the firms accountable with many saying that the delay is wanting.
