Not everyone accepts xAI’s explanation. Historian Angus Johnston criticized the company’s claim that users manipulated Grok into making offensive posts.
Writing on Bluesky, Johnston said:
“One of the most widely shared examples of Grok antisemitism was initiated by Grok itself—with no previous bigoted posting in the thread. Multiple users tried to stop it, but Grok kept going.”
This case, he argued, directly contradicts the idea that external prompts caused the chatbot’s behavior.
