An Xbox producer is under fire after suggesting that laid-off employees use AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot to manage the emotional toll of losing their jobs.
In a now-deleted LinkedIn post, Matt Turnbull, Executive Producer at Xbox Game Studios Publishing, recommended artificial intelligence as a coping tool amid widespread layoffs at Microsoft.
The tech giant recently announced plans to cut up to 9,000 jobs this year—roughly 4% of its global workforce of 228,000. Reports suggest its Xbox division is among the affected units.
Xbox Producer AI Layoff Advice Draws Criticism
Turnbull’s message, captured by tech outlet Aftermath, urged those facing redundancy to try using large language models (LLMs) for emotional support, job prep, and clarity during difficult transitions.
“If you’re navigating a layoff or even quietly preparing for one, you’re not alone… Tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can help reduce the emotional and cognitive load,” Turnbull wrote.
His post included suggested prompts for AI tools—ranging from résumé help and LinkedIn profile optimization to managing stress and building emotional confidence.
Public Backlash Over the LinkedIn Post
The post quickly drew criticism on social media. One X (formerly Twitter) user called it “plain disgusting,” while another said they were “speechless.”
Turnbull acknowledged that AI tools often trigger “strong feelings” but claimed he wanted to offer the “best advice” during a challenging period. Still, the backlash led him to delete the post.
As of now, Microsoft has not responded to requests for comment, including from the BBC.
