WhatsApp Introduces Usernames and PINs for Next-Level Privacy
WhatsApp privacy update, the world’s most popular messaging app, is preparing to roll out one of its most significant privacy features yet: usernames and PIN protection. This highly anticipated WhatsApp privacy update will let users connect without sharing their phone numbers, aligning WhatsApp more closely with Telegram and Signal in terms of privacy control
(9to5Mac, Techweez).
A New Way to Connect: WhatsApp Usernames
With usernames, WhatsApp is creating a new identity system. Users will be able to create unique handles to communicate without exposing their numbers.
- How It Works: Your username becomes your public-facing identity. Contacts who don’t already have your number will see only your username when you initiate a chat
(Mashable India, Android Headlines). - Username Rules:
- Must contain at least one letter
- Use only lowercase letters, numbers, periods, or underscores
- Cannot begin with “www” or end with a domain
- No periods at the start or end
- Maximum of 30 characters
- Must be unique; availability can be checked before selection
(RepublicWorld, Hindustan Times).
New Privacy Settings for Enhanced Control
WhatsApp will offer users three visibility options when it comes to sharing their identity:
- Username only: Your phone number is hidden. Only your username is visible.
- Phone number: The current default; your number is visible to new contacts.
- Username with PIN: A four-digit PIN is required before someone can start a conversation with you via your username
(Huawei Central, Sammy Fans).
WhatsApp PIN Protection: Locking Down Your Username
PIN protection adds an extra layer of security. Even if someone knows your username, they can’t contact you without your PIN.
- How It Works: You’ll be prompted to set up a 4-digit PIN after creating your username. Only those who know both can start a chat
(Huawei Central). - User-Friendly Prompts: WhatsApp will display a banner to encourage users to enable PIN protection when usernames are set up
(Sammy Fans).
This is particularly helpful for businesses, freelancers, and creators who want to stay reachable without revealing personal phone numbers.
Rollout Timeline: When Can You Use It?
The username and PIN features have been in development since mid-2023, with evidence across beta versions on Android, iOS, and WhatsApp Web
(Android Headlines, WABetaInfo).
While not available to all users yet, public rollout is expected before the end of 2025.
Why This WhatsApp Privacy Update Matters
By allowing anonymous, username-based chats, WhatsApp is taking a major step toward modern, privacy-first communication. It empowers users to:
- Avoid sharing personal phone numbers
- Reduce spam and scams
- Control who can initiate contact
“For the first time, users will be able to connect and chat with others without having to reveal their phone numbers. This marks a major shift from WhatsApp’s traditional identity system.”
