Uganda has signed a new agreement with Huawei to begin rolling out 5G internet across major cities. The deal was announced on July 2, 2025, by the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance. The project is expected to boost internet speeds, improve mobile connectivity, and support new technologies like smart farming, telemedicine, and e-learning.
Under the agreement, Huawei will provide the infrastructure and technical expertise, while the Ugandan government will oversee implementation and regulation. The first phase of the rollout will begin in Kampala, Entebbe, and Jinja before expanding to other regions.
The government says this partnership will help Uganda prepare for the future of digital services. Faster internet is expected to benefit businesses, schools, hospitals, and startups. It will also support the growth of mobile banking, online education, and real-time data sharing in sectors like health and agriculture.
5G technology is much faster and more reliable than 4G. It allows for high-speed downloads, smoother video streaming, and better connections in crowded areas. For Uganda, this means better access to digital services and more opportunities for tech innovation.
Huawei has worked with several African countries on similar projects. In Uganda, the company has already built a national broadband backbone and connected over 1,000 government offices to the internet. This new 5G rollout builds on that foundation.
Some critics have raised concerns about cybersecurity and data privacy. However, officials say the government will put in place strong rules to protect user data and ensure transparency in how the network is managed.
The 5G rollout is expected to begin before the end of 2025. Uganda hopes this move will strengthen its digital economy and position the country as a leader in East Africa’s tech space.
