Trump Confirms Trump TikTok Deadline Extension Could Happen
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that he will likely extend the Trump TikTok deadline extension past June 19. Speaking aboard Air Force One, he emphasized that the decision depends on getting approval from China.
“Probably, yeah,” Trump said. “Probably have to get China approval, but I think we’ll get it. I think President Xi will ultimately approve it.”
Trump previously hinted at a delay in May 2025, crediting TikTok for helping him connect with younger voters during the 2024 election.
Why the TikTok Deadline Extension Is Critical
The Trump TikTok deadline extension marks a shift in U.S. tech policy toward China. ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, still owns the app’s U.S. assets, raising concerns from lawmakers and regulators.
The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) (official website) has pushed for ByteDance to divest ownership. U.S. officials fear Beijing could access American user data, despite TikTok’s assurances about privacy protections.
TikTok claims to protect data using Project Texas, a localized storage system meant to isolate U.S. data from China.
ByteDance has explored deals with Oracle and Walmart to satisfy U.S. demands, but no sale has occurred yet.
What’s Next in the TikTok Deadline Extension
Trump may issue an executive order or request another CFIUS review before the June 19 deadline. A formal update is expected soon.
Lawmakers and legal experts anticipate possible court action from ByteDance or TikTok creators. Meanwhile, national security officials continue to monitor how TikTok operates in the U.S.
A TikTok deadline extension would buy ByteDance more time to pursue a divestment deal or further negotiations. Trump’s remarks suggest that diplomatic talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping could influence the outcome.
