President Donald Trump has extended the TikTok sale deadline by 90 days, giving the platform until September 17, 2025, to find a U.S.-based buyer or face a ban.
“I’ve just signed the Executive Order extending the Deadline for the TikTok closing for 90 days,” Trump posted on Truth Social, confirming the new date.
This is the third extension of the sale or ban deadline, originally imposed over concerns that TikTok’s Chinese ownership poses national security risks.
A Digital Lifeline for TikTok
In a statement, TikTok welcomed the extension:
“We are grateful for President Trump’s leadership and support in ensuring that TikTok continues to be available for more than 170 million American users.”
Despite initially pushing for a ban, Trump reversed his stance earlier this year, citing the app’s role in winning over young voters.
“I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok,” he said in a May interview with NBC News.
Sale Talks Continue
ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, is reportedly in discussions with U.S. authorities. Possible solutions include:
- Creating a new independent global TikTok entity
- Retaining existing U.S. investors in the new firm
- Bringing in Oracle and Blackstone to reduce ByteDance’s ownership
Still, any deal must be approved under Chinese law.

TikTok in the Tech Cold War
The platform has become a symbol of the US-China digital standoff.
“TikTok has become a flashpoint in the new Cold War for digital control,” said Shweta Singh, assistant professor at Warwick Business School.
Analysts say a major unresolved issue is the TikTok algorithm, central to the app’s success.
“TikTok without its algorithm is like Harry Potter without his wand,” said Forrester’s Kelsey Chickering.
Innovation Continues Despite Pressure
Even under regulatory uncertainty, TikTok is evolving. The platform recently launched “Symphony,” a suite of generative AI tools that help advertisers turn photos and text into short-form videos.trump-to-extend-us-tiktok-ban-deadline-white-house-says/
