Threads Adds Spoiler Feature

Spoiler Feature on Threads

Meta’s Threads platform is rolling out a new spoiler feature that lets users hide text and images behind a blurred overlay. This gives viewers the choice to reveal potentially sensitive or story-revealing content by tapping or clicking on it. The feature is designed to make discussions about trending shows and media safer for all users.

How the Spoiler Feat Works

When creating a post, users can highlight specific text or select an image and tap “Mark spoiler” to blur the content. On mobile devices, the hidden content appears behind animated floating dots, which dissipate when tapped. On desktop browsers, the spoiler feature uses a gray block to cover the content until clicked. This seamless integration makes it easy for users to protect others from spoilers. Mobile vs Desktop Implementation

The spoiler feat is currently prioritized on mobile, where the reveal is more dynamic thanks to the animated dots. On desktop, the spoiler feature is simpler, using a static gray block. According to Meta spokesperson Alec Booker, the test is global but with limited access, and improvements for desktop are ongoing. This approach acknowledges different user behaviors across platforms. Comparison With Reddit’s Spoiler Feat

Reddit has long offered a spoiler feature, but Threads’ implementation stands out for its visual approach and ease of use. Reddit uses static black bars and requires manual tags, while Threads integrates the spoiler feature directly into the posting workflow with engaging animations. However, Threads relies on individual users to use the feature appropriately, unlike Reddit’s community-enforced etiquette. See the comparison on Mashable.
