South Africa’s new electric vehicle (EV) policy

South Africa has launched a new policy to grow its electric vehicle (EV) industry. The government announced the plan on July 3, 2025, aiming to support local EV production and reduce pollution. This move puts South Africa in line with global efforts to shift to cleaner, greener transport.

The new policy offers tax breaks and funding to companies that build or assemble electric cars in South Africa. It also includes support for battery production and charging station development. The goal is to make South Africa a hub for EV manufacturing in Africa.

The Minister of Trade and Industry said the country wants to protect jobs in the auto industry while preparing for the future. Right now, South Africa makes cars mainly for export. But most of these are petrol or diesel models, and global demand is changing. If the country doesn’t shift to electric, it could lose trade partners and jobs.

Local carmakers like Toyota South Africa and BMW welcomed the news. Both companies already produce hybrid or electric models. With the new policy, they plan to expand their EV lines and train workers for the shift.

The policy also includes plans to set up public charging points in major cities. Right now, South Africa has very few charging stations. The government hopes to encourage more people to buy EVs by making it easier to charge them.

Environmental groups say this is a good step toward cutting carbon emissions. Transport is one of the biggest sources of pollution in the country. More EVs on the road could help improve air quality and reduce fuel imports.

South Africa is one of Africa’s biggest economies. Its move toward electric cars could influence other countries on the continent to follow the same path.
