AI Chatbots vs. Search Engines: A Shifting Landscape

AI chatbots are growing quickly. However, a recent two-year study by OneLittleWeb shows they still fall behind traditional search engines when it comes to driving web traffic.

The study analyzed global data from April 2023 to March 2025. It found that chatbot platforms made up only 2.96% of the visits that search engines received.

Search engines like Google and Bing remain dominant. They saw only a small drop in traffic — 0.51% — still totaling 1.86 trillion visits. Meanwhile, chatbot traffic grew by more than 80% year over year. This shows strong growth but from a much smaller starting point.

“Even with ChatGPT’s massive growth, it still gets around 26 times fewer daily visits than Google,” said Sujan Sarkar, founder of OneLittleWeb.

Why Traditional Search Still Leads Over Chatbots

Search engines keep their edge for several reasons:

  • User Trust and Habit: People have relied on search engines for decades.
  • Comprehensive Results: They index vast parts of the web.
  • Default Placement: Search engines are built into browsers and devices by default.

These reasons are supported by an AI search impact study by Sproutscape, which also explains how Google and Bing use AI to keep traffic steady.

The Evolution of Search and Chat

Rather than replacing search engines, AI chatbots are adding new value. Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is a good example, offering AI-powered improvements to search results.

Mark Vena, president of SmartTech Research, explained:

“Search is navigational. Chatbots are task-focused. Their coexistence shows how users are changing the way they find information.”

Personalized Chatbot Use Cases

Chatbots are not just about search queries. Users now turn to chatbots for companionship, support, and even therapy. This trend was highlighted in a report by TechTrendsKE.

Alex Ambrose from the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation said:

“Users are turning to chatbots for tasks like rebooking flights, automating workflows, and even therapy.”

Fastest-Growing AI Chatbots

Here are some of the fastest-growing chatbots over the past two years:

  • ChatGPT: Still leads in overall visits.
  • DeepSeek: Traffic jumped from 1.5 million to 1.7 billion visits (+113,007%).
  • Grok: Visits rose from 61,000 to 216.5 million (+353,787%).

Grok’s growth is helped by its integration with X (formerly Twitter). DeepSeek attracts users who want deep research and technical help.

The Bigger Battle: User Intent

The main competition isn’t just about traffic numbers. It’s about controlling how users start their online journeys.

Chatbots might win when it comes to productivity and personal assistance. However, search engines still lead in broad discovery and shopping.

Vena noted:

“Integration and default placement will shape the next phase.”

Greg Sterling from Near Media added:

“Search engines aren’t dying, but the old user experience is changing.”

Looking Ahead

AI chatbots and search engines are moving closer together. By combining conversational AI with classic search, both will better serve different user needs.

Rob Enderle predicted:

“By 2030, kids may see non-AI search like we now view dial phones — clunky and outdated.”
