Safaricom has officially launched its satellite internet services in Kenya, marking a major milestone in the country’s mission to connect even its most remote regions. Partnering with global satellite internet provider Starlink, the move is expected to dramatically improve internet access for underserved rural communities, businesses, and institutions across the country.

This new development allows users to access high-speed internet via satellite, bypassing the need for traditional fiber or mobile network infrastructure. It particularly benefits areas where connectivity has historically been limited or unreliable due to challenging terrain or lack of investment in broadband infrastructure. For many, it could be the first time they experience stable internet access, unlocking opportunities for digital education, e-commerce, telemedicine, and remote work.

Safaricom’s satellite internet offering includes plug-and-play kits that come with a satellite dish, Wi-Fi router, and mounting accessories. Customers can install the system themselves or use a certified technician. Once set up, the system connects directly to Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellites, delivering consistent broadband speeds suitable for both households and small enterprises.

The rollout aligns with the Kenyan government’s push to achieve universal internet coverage and promote digital inclusivity. With the satellite option, Safaricom is able to extend its reach beyond its traditional mobile coverage areas, supporting national goals of ensuring no region is left behind in the digital economy.

By adopting satellite connectivity, Kenya becomes one of the first African nations to integrate next-generation broadband delivery into mainstream telecom services. It also gives Safaricom a competitive edge in the growing demand for internet services, especially in a post-pandemic era where remote access and digital literacy are more crucial than ever.
