Reddit Fixes Global Outage Affecting 100,000+ Users
Reddit recently experienced a global outage that left more than 100,000 users unable to access the platform. The disruption began around 11:40 AM EDT, impacting users across the U.S., India, and other regions, before being resolved within about two hours.
Users faced errors such as “no content to display” and “We encountered an error” when trying to load home feeds, subreddits, and comments. At its peak, the outage tracking site Downdetector recorded over 120,000 reports, with some sources indicating up to 133,948 affected users in the U.S. alone.
Company Response to Reddit Outage
At 12:21 PM EDT, Reddit acknowledged the outage on its status page, confirming it had identified the cause and was working on a fix. The platform began recovering, with normal service resuming by 12:41 PM EDT.
In an interview with Forbes, Reddit spokesperson Courtney Geesey-Dorr said the issue stemmed from “an update we made causing some instability” but assured users the team was “seeing Reddit ramp back up” after applying the fix. The status page categorized the problem as a “partial outage” affecting desktop, mobile web, and apps.
Pattern of Recent Reddit Outages
Wednesday’s Reddit outage adds to a concerning sequence of platform disruptions. Last month, a similar incident affected nearly 31,000 users. Over the past year, Reddit has faced multiple outages, including a global disruption in April 2025 impacting approximately 101,000 users that was resolved in 30 minutes.
Past outages include a site-wide downtime in August 2024 lasting 45 minutes, and an hour-long disruption in October 2024 causing server errors. These recurring outages, highlighted by sources like PC Guide, emphasize ongoing stability challenges for Reddit.
These repeated Reddit outages spotlight the difficulties social media companies face in delivering uninterrupted service to millions relying on these platforms for community and information.
