Nigeria is scaling up its national digital identity program by integrating biometric data and AI-powered verification systems to make access to government services faster, safer, and more inclusive. The initiative, led by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), aims to give every citizen and resident a secure digital identity that can be used across health, banking, education, and social programs.

The new system collects fingerprints, facial recognition data, and iris scans, then uses artificial intelligence to detect and prevent duplicate or fraudulent entries. AI helps match biometric details quickly and accurately, even in remote areas where internet connectivity is limited. This ensures that each person is uniquely identified while reducing the risk of identity theft.
Mobile registration kits powered by AI are being used in rural communities to speed up enrollment. These kits capture biometric data offline and sync with central databases when a connection is available. This innovation helps reach people who were previously excluded due to distance or lack of documentation.
Once registered, individuals can use their digital ID to access government services with ease. Health clinics, schools, and banks can verify identity in seconds through a secure system. This reduces paperwork, speeds up service delivery, and increases trust between citizens and institutions.
The digital ID program also supports Nigeria’s efforts to improve elections, reduce corruption, and expand social benefits. By linking public services to verified identities, the government ensures that resources reach the right people—especially in programs like cash transfers and healthcare subsidies.
