On July 8, 2025, Machakos University held a strategic meeting with the M-Pesa Foundation to advance its Smart TVET Project, part of the Citizens of the Future program. This partnership aims to create a world-class TVET facility that empowers young Kenyans through modern, market-relevant technical and vocational training.
The event was attended by senior university officials including Vice-Chancellor Prof. Joyce Agalo, Prof. Mugendi M’Rithaa, Prof. David Mulwa, Director TVET Nicholas Mwunda, and Ms. Alice Njeri, alongside project architect Kent Gichuru.
Facility Design and Scope
The upcoming 2,500 m² Smart TVET facility is designed for optimal accessibility, sustainability, and functionality. Key features include:
- Three levels with elevators and ramps
- A digital reception and display area
- Natural light and ventilation throughout
- Dedicated lecture halls, administrative offices, and staff lounges
- High-ceiling technical workshops designed for intensive practical training
The design emphasizes a future-ready learning environment in line with Kenya Vision 2030.
Specialized Workshops and Smart Technologies
The facility will house industry-specific workshops across multiple disciplines:
- Automotive Engineering – electric vehicle (EV) technology and diagnostics
- Mechanical Engineering – sustainable manufacturing and automation
- Civil Engineering – materials testing and structural design
- Electrical & Electronics – control systems and renewable energy integration
- Building & Construction – carpentry, masonry, and safety-compliant tools
- Fashion & Design – digital garment production and sustainable fashion
- Food & Beverage – a commercial-grade kitchen and demonstration restaurant
- Cosmetology – spa-standard beauty and wellness training labs
Supporting the workshops will be:
- ICT labs equipped with CAD, simulations, and manufacturing software
- Virtual reality (VR) for immersive learning
- A 3D body scanner for fashion and health-related programs
- Solar power systems and energy efficiency tools integrated into the facility
The centre will also feature an exhibition and pitch area, allowing students to display and test their innovations.
Endorsement and Capacity
Machakos University has received formal endorsement from the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Authority (TVETA). According to a university statement, the institution currently runs 29 accredited TVET programs serving over 1,500 students.
Funding and Timeline
The project is supported through a grant by the M-Pesa Foundation, which will fund:
- Facility construction and landscaping
- Equipment and machinery for specialized workshops
- Interior furnishing for learning and administrative spaces
With architectural feedback now incorporated, the tendering process is set to begin, and construction is expected to start shortly. The facility is projected to be completed within 12 months of groundbreaking.
