In a move to equip young people with future-ready skills, Machakos Town Technical and Vocational College (MTTVC) has officially rolled out the Jitume Digital Skills Training Program. This initiative, spearheaded by the Ministry of ICT and supported by partners like Konza Technopolis and the ICT Authority, brings high-speed internet and modern virtual desktop infrastructure to the hands of learners—many of whom previously lacked access to basic computing tools.

The Jitume program is designed to prepare students for the digital job market by offering training in areas such as coding, cybersecurity, cloud computing, and digital marketing. Beyond tech courses, the program also offers business development and soft skills training to help students thrive in both freelance and formal tech careers.

What sets the Jitume program apart is its inclusivity. The Machakos rollout includes provisions for students living with disabilities, ensuring that no one is left out of Kenya’s digital transformation journey. Special learning stations and assistive technology tools have been set up to accommodate all learners.

Students participating in the program also gain access to the Ajira Digital Platform, where they can find online jobs, connect with mentors, and build their digital work profiles. This hands-on experience means that many students will leave school already having real-world work experience through freelancing gigs in writing, design, transcription, and more.

County education officials have praised the program for its potential to reduce youth unemployment and improve livelihoods across Machakos. Local leaders are now pushing for the program to be scaled across other TVETs and learning institutions in the region.

With thousands of students expected to benefit from the digital skills training, Machakos is emerging as a stronghold in the government’s broader vision to turn Kenya into a globally competitive digital economy. The Jitume program is not just training students—it’s unlocking opportunity, building confidence, and setting the stage for a digitally empowered generation.
