Kenya Power has announced a strategic move to bolster electric vehicle (EV) adoption by installing 45 charging stations in six counties across the country. This initiative is part of the utility firm’s broader effort to support the growing shift toward e-mobility and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
The chargers will be distributed in Nairobi, Nakuru, Kisumu, Mombasa, Eldoret, and Nyeri, with Nairobi set to receive the highest number. Kenya Power aims to accelerate the development of charging infrastructure as a key pillar in promoting the uptake of electric vehicles in both private and public transport sectors.
According to the company, the selected locations were strategically identified based on traffic volumes and proximity to key highways and urban centers. The project is expected to be rolled out in phases, with the first installations scheduled to begin later this year.
This move aligns with Kenya’s broader green energy goals and Vision 2030 development agenda, which includes transitioning to more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources. Kenya Power also reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with both government and private sector players to drive the adoption of electric mobility across the country.
As EV usage steadily increases in Kenya, the availability of reliable charging infrastructure will be vital to sustaining that momentum. The new charging stations are expected to ease range anxiety for EV users and signal a strong institutional backing for the country’s e-mobility journey.
