Machakos County is gearing up to become a key player in Kenya’s renewable energy future, with the planned launch of one of the country’s largest floating solar projects. Spearheaded by the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen), the 42.5-megawatt floating solar plant is set to be built on Kamburu Dam, which borders parts of Machakos County. The project is expected to begin construction in late 2024 and run through 2027.

Floating solar technology, also known as floatovoltaics, involves installing solar panels on water bodies. This approach not only generates clean electricity but also reduces evaporation, improves water quality by limiting algae growth, and increases panel efficiency due to the natural cooling effect of the water. For Kenya, this innovative solution addresses both power and environmental challenges.

The Kamburu project is part of KenGen’s broader green energy strategy aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and promoting sustainable electricity production. Once operational, the floating solar farm will inject significant clean power into the national grid, helping to meet growing demand while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

KenGen officials have noted that the project will also stimulate local job creation during both the construction and operational phases. Additionally, the initiative is expected to benefit nearby communities through improved energy access and potential partnerships in maintenance and environmental monitoring.

Machakos County leaders have welcomed the investment, calling it a strategic move that supports Kenya’s climate goals under the Paris Agreement and Vision 2030. With global attention shifting toward clean energy innovation, the floating solar project puts Machakos on the map as a forward-looking region embracing sustainable development.
