IEBC Voter Portal Restored After Days-Long Outage

The IEBC voter portal is now back online, following a prolonged outage that left millions of Kenyans unable to access their registration details. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) confirmed the restoration of services after completing a system migration aimed at enhancing performance and security.

For several days, both the online verification tool and the SMS platform—where voters send their ID or passport number and year of birth to 70000—remained inaccessible. The unexplained downtime sparked widespread frustration, particularly as political activity gains momentum ahead of the 2027 General Election.

IEBC Voter Portal Restored Amid Public Concern

In a Statement , the IEBC said:

“We wish to assure all Kenyans that the registration details of the 22,120,458 registered voters, as recorded during the 2022 General Election, remain intact and secure.”

The Commission emphasized that the system upgrade was essential to improve service delivery and protect voter data. However, the initial lack of transparency regarding the outage duration, start time, and technical details created confusion and concern.

Observers noted that the IEBC’s earlier statement—“We will promptly communicate once the system is fully operational”—failed to provide a clear timeline or specifics.

Pressure Builds on IEBC to Improve Communication

The sudden unavailability of voter verification tools reignited debates about the Commission’s preparedness and commitment to transparency. Kenya’s electoral history includes repeated disputes over vote integrity, which makes access to voter rolls and communication from the IEBC especially sensitive.

Civil society groups and election observers are now urging the Commission to adopt better communication protocols when managing critical systems. The IEBC voter portal restored update brought some relief, but many believe the Commission should have proactively engaged with the public throughout the maintenance window.

Why the Voter Portal Matters

The voter verification platform is a cornerstone of Kenya’s electoral process. It allows citizens to confirm their registration status, identify errors in the electoral roll, and engage meaningfully in democracy.

With more than 22 million registered voters, growing political tension, and public expectations rising, the IEBC faces increased pressure to ensure its systems remain secure, stable, and transparent as 2027 approaches.
