DuckDuckGo Introduces AI Images Filter
Privacy-focused browser DuckDuckGo is rolling out a new setting that lets users filter out AI images in search results. The company launched this feature in response to user feedback that AI images often interfere with finding genuine results.
How AI Images Filtering Works
DuckDuckGo’s AI images filter uses curated open-source blocklists such as the “nuclear” list from uBlock Origin and the uBlacklist Huge AI Blocklist. While not perfect, this method significantly reduces AI-generated synthetic images from search results.
Users can enable the filter through a dropdown on the Images tab, permanently in search settings, or by visiting noai.duckduckgo.com, where the filter is active by default along with AI assistant features disabled.
uBlockOrigin Integration for AI Images
The same blocklists DuckDuckGo uses are compatible with the uBlock Origin browser extension, which supports Firefox, Brave, and others. By applying the Huge AI Blocklist, users can filter AI images not only on DuckDuckGo but also across search engines like Google and Bing.
Other options include customizing query filters, mobile apps using uBlacklist, and network-level filters via tools like Pi-hole or AdGuard, using hosts files based on the blocklists.
The Baby Peacock Example
The choice of the “baby peacock” search term highlights a known issue where AI images overwhelmed authentic photos in search results. This example became a popular complaint about search engines returning AI-generated content instead of genuine pictures, showing why filtering AI images improves user experience.
DuckDuckGo’s approach underscores its commitment to user control by offering flexible, privacy-focused tools to reduce AI clutter in image searches.
