Amazon Acquires AI Wearable Startup Bee for Transcription Device

Amazon has acquired Bee, a San Francisco-based AI wearable startup known for its $49.99 device that continuously listens to and transcribes users’ conversations throughout the day. Announced by Bee CEO Maria de Lourdes Zollo on LinkedIn, the acquisition brings Amazon head-to-head in the personal AI hardware race with competitors like Meta and OpenAI.

The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed, but Amazon confirmed that all of Bee’s employees were offered positions within the company. “Ethan and I couldn’t think of better partners to help us bring truly personal, agentic AI to even more customers,” Zollo said in her LinkedIn post.

AI Wearable Device Features

Bee’s wrist-worn device uses dual microphones to record conversations, which are transcribed in real-time on a connected smartphone. The AI generates personalized summaries, reminders, and insights based on the transcriptions, while also integrating with users’ calendars, contacts, and emails. The device operates for up to seven days on a single charge and comes as a wristband or clip-on accessory.

At a price of $49.99, Bee’s device positions itself as a more affordable alternative to competitors like Meta’s $299 Ray-Ban smart glasses. Victoria Song of The Verge described Bee as “the most successful AI wearable” she has tested—although she noted that was “a very low bar” compared to failures like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1.

AI Wearable Privacy Concerns

The acquisition has raised privacy concerns due to Bee’s always-listening technology becoming part of Amazon’s vast data ecosystem. Although Bee previously stated that it never stored raw audio recordings and used encrypted on-device processing, Amazon has not made any explicit commitments to maintain these privacy policies.

An Amazon spokesperson told GeekWire, “We design our products to protect our customers’ privacy and security and to make it easy for them to be in control of their experience — and this approach would of course apply to Bee.” However, the spokesperson did not confirm whether Bee’s original “no audio storage” policy will continue.

AI Wearable Competitive Landscape

This acquisition sets Amazon as a competitor to tech giants with varying approaches to AI hardware. Meta has invested $3.5 billion in smart glasses partner EssilorLuxottica and expanded into performance eyewear with Oakley. Meanwhile, OpenAI merged with designer Jony Ive’s firm in a $6.5 billion deal to develop new AI-native devices.

Before the acquisition, Bee had raised $7 million from investors including Exor, Greycroft, and New Wave VC. The product remains in preorder status with a scheduled launch planned for September.
