Advanced Nuclear Reactors Gain Ground with Six New Designs in the US

The future of clean energy is heating up—literally. The United States is making big strides in advanced nuclear power, with six new reactor designs gaining traction through regulatory channels.

These next-generation reactors offer major upgrades over traditional nuclear plants. They are smaller, safer, and more efficient. Some use molten salt or gas as coolants instead of water. Why does it matter? As countries race to reduce carbon emissions, nuclear energy is getting renewed attention. It provides stable, low-emission power that complements wind and solar. Unlike fossil fuels, advanced nuclear reactors do not release carbon dioxide during operation.

These reactors are also equipped with passive safety systems. That means they can cool themselves without outside power or human intervention—reducing the risk of accidents.

If all goes well, these designs could be powering communities within the next decade. They could also help revive interest in nuclear engineering as a career, opening up thousands of skilled jobs.

The move toward advanced reactors is part of a larger energy transition. As the grid becomes cleaner and smarter, these nuclear systems may play a key role in delivering reliable, round-the-clock electricity.
